How to Set Up a Spare Account for Bank Switching

Ready to make £950 from switching offers, whilst keeping your Main current account untouched?

This guide walks you through setting up a Spare current account, adding the right direct debits, and getting it ready for your first switch offer.

After that, you then switch between switching offer banks i.e. switch from the 1st offer bank account to the 2nd offer bank account and so on. Nice!

Just follow the 4 simple steps below.

Pick your Spare account

You have two options:

Option 1: Use an existing account (recommended / 1 min)

This could be an old account or one you've set up from a Quidsy offer e.g. Monzo.

Just check the bank is part of Current Account Switching Service (CASS) using the search on the CASS list. Note: Revolut and Zopa are not part of CASS.

Or Option 2: Open a new current account (10 mins)

The best new current account is one that makes you profit too! So complete the Monzo Offer guide then use it for switching offers.

If Monzo is your Main account, then set up an account with Starling Bank. They are part of CASS and do not run sign up or switching offers, so you aren't missing out on anything!

Add £20 (3 mins)

Add £20 to your Spare current account e.g. transfer from your Main current account.

This will cover Step 3 (Direct Debits) and Step 4 (make a small purchase).

Add 2 Direct Debits

Most switching offers need 2 Direct Debits in place before you switch. Here's how to sort this:

Option 1: Create 2 x £2 Charity DDs (10 mins)

You can do this on charity websites (min £2). There are many charities but below are 2 options:

With these 2 charities you can select either the 1st or 15th of the month.

As per their websites, I'd recommend at least 25 days from now i.e. choose 15th May 2026.

15th May 2026 meets the timeframe to set up a Direct Debit on each charity's website. Plus they will all come out on the same day so it's easy for you to track.

Just set a reminder to check after the 15th May 2026 that they have processed. This will be a total £6 donation but you'll make at least £150 from your first offer.

Or Option 2: Create new 2 x £1 DDs with Quidsy (recommended / 5 mins)

Set up £1 Direct Debit

Repeat the Direct Debit setup 2 times in total.

Or Option 3: Move existing small DDs (15 mins)

Check the DDs you have in your Main account. Login to the provider e.g. electricity provider, and change the details to your Spare account.

If you choose this option, rather than adding £20 (step 2) you will need enough to cover the next payment of each DD.

Note you will need to wait until each DD is paid once before starting your switch.

Make 1 Card Transaction (2 mins)

If you have never used your bank card before, it is best to make 1 transaction so it's activated.

You can just buy a £5 Amazon gift card and use it next time you use Amazon.

Alternatively, use a few pounds of the £20 you added (step 2) next time you go shopping.

Congratulations, you're now ready to switch!

Head back to Your Offers and select your first switching offer.
